WHERE TO BUY IN RIO DE JANEIRO
You don’t have to look anymore. Here you will know exactly where to find what you want to buy. We have created a shopping guide in Rio de Janeiro for you.
SHOPPING MALLS
It’s the first place that comes to mind when you want to buy something. In Rio, you will find a huge diversity of galleries and shopping malls in all regions, where there are from local brand stores, multi-brands and the best international brands. Some of the main shopping centers are mainly in the South and West Zones. *South Zone: Botafogo Praia Shopping, Rio Sul, Galeria River, Shopping Leblon. *West Zone: Rio Design, Fashion Mall, Village Mall, Barra Shopping and Shopping New York.
POPULAR TRADE
Rio has several popular trade complexes. The two most famous are in the Center, and are just off the Uruguayan subway. They are the camelódromo and saara, bringing together shopping blocks of everything you can imagine, usually at the best prices. Have you thought of anything? It is very likely that it has there, perhaps not of the best quality, but certainly with the greatest variety.
FAIRS
A very carioca way of shopping is going to the fairs. In them, the act of buying becomes a light, fun program, and with a lot of exchange. Even in the weekly free fairs of fruits and vegetables, such as Gloria (Sunday) or Praça General Osório (Tuesday), in Ipanema, it is normal to find a part dedicated to other items not necessarily food – and do not be surprised if you even have live music. To accompany this tour, pastelzinho with cane broth (with lemon is great!) is traditional, but you also find special foods such as assorted tapiocas and even fresh Japanese food! Another very rich and fun way to buy are at seasonal fashion, craft and culture fairs, real events that put you buying straight from the producer, or someone who knows very well what is being sold. The product gains another value, comes loaded with history and care. These fairs are very common in Rio and support a whole network of local producers. What’s more, there are excellent programs where it is common to eat very well and have fun with some cultural attraction, that is, a true eventão far beyond shopping. Among the best known are: 1. Local Joint
2. The Market for Independent Designers
3. Tiradentes Cultural 4. Carioquíssima In addition to these, there are other fairs that are close to the hearts of those who live in Rio de Janeiro, such as: *Praça XV Antiques Fair (with collectors’ items and lots of fantastic knick-knacks for lovers of old things), *Lavradio Fairin Lapa (when Rua do Lavradio is filled with stalls selling antiques, handicrafts, accessories, fashion, decorative items and lots of good music). *Northeastern Traditions Fairin São Cristóvão (a large pavilion that pays homage to the people of the northeast who migrated to Rio de Janeiro but brought with them their art, culture and gastronomy, which, even though they are not native to Rio, are part of the Brazilian soul), both of which are unmissable.
WALKING
You will see street walkers selling everything almost everywhere: on the beaches, on the streets, in the squares, even within public transport, such as buses or trains. They are formal self-employed workers who have created their ways of maintaining themselves by providing sustenance. Do not wait for quality or warranty. But it’s amazing how often they show up with what you want exactly when you need it most, for example, when a bikini breaks on the beach or when the headphones stop working inside the subway. It won’t be the best bikini or the best phone in the world, but it sure will save!
