RIO DE JANEIRO METRO A GREAT OPTION FOR LOCOMOTION

There are three subway lines in Rio de Janeiro: lines 1, 2 and 4, which connect the central region to the north, south and west areas of the city. The route is made in two main extensions, operated by trains identified with the colors red (lines 1 and 4) and green (line 2). By looking at the subway map of Rio de Janeiro below, you can see that the lines complement each other in a certain way.

Line 1, orange, runs from General Osório station in Ipanema to Uruguay station in Tijuca. Line 2, green in color, connects botafogo station, in the South Zone, to Pavuna station, which is in the North Zone. Line 4, yellow, runs from General Osório station in Ipanema to Jardim Oceânico station in Barra da Tijuca.

Botafogo, Flamengo, Largo do Machado, Catete, Glória, Cinelândia, Carioca, Uruguaiana, Presidente Vargas and Central stations, which are located in the central region of Rio de Janeiro, are common for both lines 1 and 2. On weekdays, if you need to change direction at any of these stations, just get off at any of them and get on the next train of the line you want. On a few specific days, such as weekends and holidays, it may be that the line exchange is held at some particular season, but usually these exceptions are reported in Portuguese and In English, so always be aware of the information.

The subway has wagons intended exclusively for women, signposted in pink, on weekdays from 6:00 am to 9:00 am and from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

For your safety, be ware of bags and backpacks at peak times.

The wagons are usually cleaned and the station is well taken care of. All have escalator and services such as snack bars, but it is valid to stress that there is no bathroom in all seasons.

To have the subway map on your mobile phone, download the MetroRio app. With it you can check the schedules and set your all.

For payment, the metro accepts the purchase of tickets in cash (Real only) directly at the ticket offices in the stations, RioCard and also the card Girocard, a prepaid service available at self-service machines in the stations.
