Although they are two very equal modalities in their essence and both constitute free flight, hang gliding and paragliding have many differences between them in practice.
The paragliding has the advantage of being lighter than hang gliding, which facilitates takeoff and landing and also ensures a more effective mastery of the material. The total weight of the paraglider is approximately 20 kg, while the hang glider varies according to its class, between 30 and 40 kg.
The hang glider, in turn, is faster than paragliding and is considered an adventure sport. The hang glider reaches speeds between 25 and 140 km/h, while with the paragliding speeds are 15 to 45 km/h. On the hang glider, the flight takes place lying down and with the front of the body facing down. In the paragliding one flies seated. As for landing, the paragliding has a lower speed than the hang glider and this ensures an advantage when approaching the ground providing an easier landing.
