MUSEUMS RIO DE JANEIRO
MUSEUMS RIO DE JANEIRO
Apart from all the natural beauty and open-air activities that the city has to offer, Rio de Janeiro has a vast list of museums and cultural centers to visit. Don’t miss out on this rich cultural side of Rio!Museum of Modern Art: MAM The Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro is one of the most important cultural institutions in Brazil and Latin America. His collection includes pieces by Cândido Portinari, Tarsila do Amaral, Di Cavalcanti, among others. The headquarters building of the museum is a separate work of art, as well as its gardens, located in Aterro do Flamengo. It’s an interesting walk inside and outside the museum! Museum of Tomorrow Built in 2015, the Museum of Tomorrow is a landmark in the revitalization of the Port Zone. Where once a disabled pier was seen, it gained a postmodern, technological construction, and at the same time organic and sustainable. It is a museum of arts and sciences, with the mission to warn about the dangers of climate change, environmental degradation and social collapse. The building has all been designed for energy efficiency, and its solar spines move according to changing weather conditions. The main exhibition is mostly digital and focuses on ideas rather than objects. The museum has partnerships with important Brazilian universities and global scientific institutions and real-time data collection on the climate and population of space agencies and the United Nations. The Museum of Tomorrow elevates the scientific, artistic and cultural scene of the city, further engaging it in its declared commitment to the planet Earth.
MAC The Museum of Contemporary Art, MAC, is shaped like a flying saucer or a chalice, and was one of architect Oscar Niemeyer’s most emblematic works. Installed at The Boa Viagem Lookout in Niterói, with its futuristic façade, you can enjoy panoramic views both outside the museum and from the inside. Apart from the contemporary art exhibitions, there are countless activities that take place at the museum with the aim of encouraging artistic production to transgress the internal spaces and expose itself in public spaces, precisely where people who are not from the art world are. National Historical Museum This beautiful museum located in Praça Marechal Âncora, in the historic center of the city, is dedicated to the history of Brazil. It was created in 1922 as part of the celebrations of the Centenary of The Independence of Brazil and has a vast collection of about 300,000 pieces, which correspond to 67% of the Brazilian museum heritage. They are manuscripts, iconography, furniture, armaria, sculptures, clothing, among other items in the collection. The neocolonialist architectural ensemble was built on what remained of the ancient Fort of St. James and the Dungeon Prison. It’s a walk through the centuries of history of the city and Brazil. Rio Art Museum With its undulating roof like the waves of the sea uniting the former palace of King João VI, which functions as an art school, and the modernist building where the exhibitions are held, the Rio Art Museum brings together important pieces from the history of Rio de Janeiro and works by contemporary artists. An interesting mixture like Rio itself, melting point of so many cultures, influences and times. It’s a must-see tour!
