INFORMATION ABOUT RIO DE JANEIRO
The name Rio de Janeiro refers both to the State (federative unit of Brazil) and to its capital, the city of Rio de Janeiro, known worldwide as the Wonderful City. The State of Rio de Janeiro is located in the Southeast region of Brazil and is bathed by the Atlantic Ocean. The official language is the Portuguese, and the official currency is the Real.
The authentic landscape of the city, which unites natural beauties in the middle of the metropolis, earned Rio de Janeiro the title of Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2012. Rio has paradisiacal beaches, not only urban and most famous, but also wild and little explored beaches. In addition, it has the two largest forest parks in the world, whose preserved area corresponds to 10% of the size of the city, full of viewpoints, waterfalls and impressive islands.
There is also a strong cultural life, with several options of cultural centers, museums, cinemas and theaters, not to mention the variety of cultural programs around their corners, generally little known by the large audience of tourists.
Founded by Estácio de Sá on March 1, 1565, having as patron saint São Sebastião, the estimated resident population of Rio de Janeiro is 6,718,903 people according to IBGE in 2019.
With a total area of 1,224.56 km², being only 644.56 km² urbanized, the city has 106.4 km² in extension of beaches (oceanic and inland). Rio has 3 large massifs, the Pedra Branca massif, the Tijuca massif and the Gericinó or Mendanha massif. The first two are the largest urban forests in the world. The climate is tropical with an average temperature of 23.2ºC and can easily reach more than 40 ºC in the summer months, from December to March.
