Whatever means of transportation you use to get to Rio de Janeiro, don’t forget to always pay attention to traffic rush hours. On weekdays, the flow is very intense towards the city center in the morning , with traffic jams that can cause you to lose hours of your day. The same happens on Sunday night and at the end of the holidays. Also be minded by the rush times at the time of your departure, always trying to leave in advance and catch the counterflow.

SOME MORE IMPORTANT TIPS

  • The use of seat belts in Brazil is mandatory, both in the passenger seat and in the back seats.
  • Avoid slamming the taxi door. It seems disrespectful to the drivers.
  • If you take a regular taxi (yellow cars), always ask for the value of the meter to be considered, otherwise you run the risk of paying more than you should.
  • For safety reasons, avoid taking taxis that are not cooperative. Cooperative taxis have the name of the company written prominently.
  • Rest assured that the driver has understood the correct destination. Confirm more than once where you want to go if necessary. Always try to take with you the address of your annotated destination, to reconfirm it to the driver.
  • In Rio, there are two types of taximeter flags: from Monday to Saturday, from 9am to 6pm, taxis run in flag 1, with cheaper fares. Flag 2 is applied after this time, and also on Sundays, public holidays and throughout the month of December, with higher rates.
  • As the condition of the cars may not be very good, try opting for better maintained cars.
  • The best taxis to pick up at the International Airport are from Aerocoop or Aerotaxi. To pick them up, you must go outside the airport building and find them parked on the street. Usually, there are many cars at your disposal and they will try to make you pay dearly on your transportation. You can also opt for private cars, whose companies have service stands on the landing part. Payment, in such cases, is made directly at the branches of these agencies.
  • If the driver of regular taxis picks up a suspicious list with erased values, don’t worry, they don’t necessarily want to fool you. Most of the time, it is a list with old values that have been updated with the price of the race of the year in question. There is, in custom, a list affixed to the car window with the values tabled. The taxi driver also has the right to charge an extra fee if you carry a lot of luggage.
