It was created in 1922 as part of the celebrations of the Centenary of The Independence of Brazil and has a vast collection of about 300,000 pieces, which correspond to 67% of the Brazilian museum heritage. They are manuscripts, iconography, furniture, armaria, sculptures, clothing, among other items in the collection. The neocolonialist architectural ensemble was built on what remained of the ancient Fort of St. James and the Dungeon Prison.
